Types of Redbush Tea - Green Rooibos

Green Rooibos

There are two main types of rooibos tea. Green rooibos, and red rooibos. Green rooibos is harvested from the same plant as red rooibos, but it is prepared slightly differently. Red rooibos is produced by bruising and oxidising the redbush plant leaves,  whereas green rooibos is formed by treating the plant to prevent it from oxidising. This leaves the brew closer to the natural state of the plant.

So what is the difference in taste between red and green rooibos? Green redbush tea will have a sweeter and fruitier taste than the dark and smokey red variety. When taken green, it is unlikely that you will need any sweeteners to complement to taste of the brew.

Both green and red rooibos have properties that give you fantastic health benefits, but they are slightly different. Green rooibos has a higher amount of antioxidants than the red variety, however this doesn’t necessarily mean it is better for you. Scientists have recently said that the two types provided slightly different health benefits, and it is likely that neither is “better for you” than the other.

Flavoured Rooibos

Vanilla rooibos tea.

Vanilla rooibos is a very popular blend of standard redbush tea with vanilla. The vanilla sweetens the smoky rooibos, producing a delicious and deeply flavoured cup of tea. Recently it has been popping up all over the place, becoming very popular in star bucks and stocked in major supermarkets.

Hazelnut rooibos tea.

Recently we have seen a lot of hazelnut rooibos cropping up. It is a very sweet and very comforting blend, producing a mellow and aromatic tea.

Mint rooibos tea.

Twinings and other brands of tea makers have come up with this deliciously refreshing blend of rooibos tea. A redbush and peppermint infusion is particularly cooling on a hot summers day.

Rooibos with ginger and honey.

When redbush tea is flavoured with ginger and honey, it becomes a wonderfully spicy tea. We think it is perfect for the winter, as it is bound to warm you up on a cold night.
